Our Story and Achievement
Introduction
Last year, the BUAN Library applied to become one of the AGRIS (International System for Agricultural Science and Technology) Data Providers in Botswana, and the application was successfully approved in August 2025. AGRIS is an international database and network established to collect, manage, and disseminate information and publications related to agriculture, food, and the environment. It facilitates global knowledge sharing, promotes open access to research outputs, and helps reduce information gaps between developing and developed countries. AGRIS is managed by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).
What It Entails to Become AGRIS Data Provider
Becoming an AGRIS Data Provider means that the BUAN Institutional Repository (BUAN Research Hub) contributes metadata for its publications, such as journal articles, conference papers, reports, and theses, to the AGRIS database. As a data provider, the Repository ensures that its bibliographic information meets AGRIS quality standards and adheres to standardized formatting guidelines. This role further demonstrates BUAN’s commitment to supporting open access and the broad dissemination of knowledge in agriculture and related fields.

The benefits of being an AGRIS Data Provider are significant. BUAN’s research outputs gain global visibility through the FAO’s international platform, thereby increasing their accessibility and impact. In recognition of BUAN Institutional Repository’s valuable data contributions throughout 2025, AGRIS awarded the University the “Seal of Recognition for Active Data Provider of the Year 2026” at the end of 2025.
